Work Related Stress Explodes As Government Wonder Why Productivity Remains Low In UK

This Tory Government continues to state that the UK stands as having the 5th lowest productivity in the whole of Europe, is a mystery that needs to be addressed; whilst ignoring the causes in order to justify their claim.

The facts and the reality is that if you pay your workers amongst the lowest in Europe, make their working hours amongst the longest in the whole of the EU, minimise staffing levels, ensure in-work poverty increases to over 8 million; and make it easy for employers to sack workers; you are creating the worst climate for productivity possible! It is indeed, no mystery to Trade Unions who have been battling against the above working climate for over a 150 years!

This Tory government in the meantime is ensuring the country goes back to the 1700s when it comes to worker's rights.

Facts:

  • 15.4 million working days lost to work-related stress in 2017/2018 – an increase of nearly 3 million.

  • 239,000 new cases of work-related stress, depression and anxiety reported over the last year.

The TUC this week, issued a press release in response to the release of the latest work-related stress figures released by the HSE:

Commenting on figures published by the Health and Safety Executive today (Wednesday 31st October), which show that 15.4 million working days were lost to work-related stress, anxiety and depression in 2017/2018, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“Work-related stress is a growing epidemic. It’s time employers and the government took it more seriously.

Warm words are not going to fix this problem. Managers need to do far more to reduce the causes of stress and support employees struggling to cope.

This means tackling issues like excessive workloads and bullying in the office. Toxic workplaces are bad for staff and productivity.

My advice to anyone suffering from stress, anxiety and depression at work is to join a union. This is the best way to get your concerns heard.”
